New faces could put an end to India's combination conundrum

"In a team sport, it's important that you do well as a team," Mahendra Singh Dhoni stressed at the end of the opening Twenty20 International (T20I) in Adelaide.
Looking at - Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah - you can't miss the sense that it does indeed look like a team, now.
Throughout India's One Day International (ODI) games against South Africa at home and against Australia, more recently, the team has struggled to put out a side that looks balanced and transudes hope. India faced the Ajinkya Rahane-conundrum before the right-hander made the spot his own with some solid performances. They tried to push Raina down the order to try him out as India's next finisher. He didn't become one. Dhoni sent himself up the order because he liked it better batting higher up. The move tanked badly.
Out in Australia, India came in with fresh, but not really well-thought-out ideas. Raina was dropped. Two promising youngsters were included. But when Dhoni wanted to bat up the order now, or when Rohit wanted to hit the all-out-attack button, they were wary of inexperienced batsmen to follow. India were forced to drop their best bowler over the last 12 months, because the other spinner batted a bit better. India's finishing, batting either side of the innings, suffered as a result.
Then in the T20Is, the old guard were called back. And immediately, the squad looks much better. More settled. With more belief.
"You often see that one or two individuals have done well but the team doesn't win. Ultimately no one likes that," Dhoni said. "If you do well, you want the team to win. This was a comprehensive win and it felt nice as a team. Of course, Virat's contribution was very important. I feel Raina batted well in that regard and accelerated a bit later. Virat, of course, has been the pick of the batsmen."
David Warner, on his return to the Australian side in Canberra, declared that the best thing about Australian cricket was their superb bench strength. It's a luxury that India isn't too unfamiliar with, especially when it comes to their batting. That affluence still remains...
"We'll wait and watch once he (Rahane) gets fit, because that will only increase the problem, but I think it's a good problem to have."
... but the lack of it in other areas is stark.
"Allrounders are important. Even if Hardik Pandya doesn't bowl four overs for me in every game, even if he bowls only two or three overs, I can still use others. What I don't want is the top five or six batters including the keeper (and) you don't have a bowling option. So if somebody goes for runs you don't really know what to do at that point of time."
This was exactly the problems Dhoni was facing when his main bowlers like Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav were bleeding runs in the ODIs. His part-time options were Rohit and Kohli - not totally inspiring options.
"Somebody or the other will go for runs, and that's the time when you want your part-time allrounders to come in and give you that one over, because that one over can really help. We'll wait and watch, we'll see how it goes because I think it's important to have players like Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina who can bowl and bat. If you have too many one-dimensional players, especially in your top order, then it becomes very difficult if somebody has a bad day," he adds.
It may be early days yet, but Pandya looks like the sort of player who could solve a lot of problems for the side. Dhoni's ever-yearning search for a seaming-allrounder could be quenched if Pandya performs to expectations. He certainly didn't in his first over today, when he gave away 19 runs, including five wides.
"After the first over, I knew that whenever he comes in to bowl the second over, it will be better than his first. And that's what happened. I was quite happy with his second and third overs. But still, he'll have to be more and more consistent with his line and length and that will give me a lot of confidence to consistently play him as a third seamer if the need arises."
"That's why Hardik was playing this game, because if he also gets going, it gives us the kind of stability we are looking for. And in turn that can go into the ODI team also. For now, we play only T20s, but we'll see how they keep performing and how consistent they are, and in turn that will give us a lot of stability in the side," Dhoni added.
It does look like we'd be jumping the gun if we claim Pandya is the panacea to all of India's problems of finding a genuine seaming allrounder. But there is certainly scope for promise. He allows the captain a lot of stability and flexibility, and for a team that is looking to chart its success over the next few years, he could be the vital cog.
And if there is a problem of plenty, that would be, like for Australia, the greatest thing about Indian cricket.

Nepal to gift 2 rhinos to China

Nepal will provide two one-horned rhinoceros as gifts to China upon the request from the Chinese side.
Forest Minister Agni Sapkota said Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed to forward the process to gift a pair of mammals to the northern neighbours.
“PM Oli has agreed to gift a pair of rhinos to China. The gifts will be made after a cabinet decision,” he said. Chinese Forest Minister Zhang Jianlong and other Chinese officials had requested the Nepali side for the rhinos during Forest Minister Sapkota’s visit to China.
“I had forwarded their request to the PM. The process to gift the rhinos will soon go ahead,” Sapkota said. Sapkota said preparations were being made to gift the mammals during an impending visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal.
In exchange for the rhinos, the Chinese side had agreed to provide financial and technical assistant for the proposed Forensic Science Laboratory in Bhaktapur, assist in establishing an international center on community forests, Minister Sapkoa said.
As per a recent census, there are 645 rhinos in Nepal. Of the total, 605 of them are in Chitwan National Park. The rhinos to be gifted to China will also be selected from the park.

Kathmandu-bound flights being searched In Delhi after bomb scare

Kathmandu bound Jet Airways and Air India flights are being searched in New Delhi following a bomb scare, Indian news agencies have reported.
Passengers have deplaned from the aircrafts and security agencies are conducting a search, reported The Hindu quoting New Delhi Airport sources.
This is the second time the flights have been grounded in New Delhi following threat of onboard explosive objects. On Monday, a Jet Airways flight was grounded after an anonymous call was received claiming to have planted a bomb under one of the seats of the plane.
The call later turned out to be a hoax and the flight took off after a delay of six hours.

The eSport fever grips Nepali gamers

It was in early 2000s that netizens experienced something that would change the whole discourse of video gaming. It was eSports: the abbreviation for Electronic Sports. Even though it is popular among mainstream gamers, what eSport actually entails has been a topic of curiosity to others—what does playing an eSport actually entail?
To put it simply, eSport are competitive tournaments held among professional gamers who compete in various single or multiplayer video games. These gaming events feature the best competitive gamers who battle against each other to claim the winning title, while hundreds and thousands of spectators stand witness. In the last decade, the number has gone up significantly to millions worldwide and the eSport phenomenon has grown towards being a multi-billion industry.
Many argue whether playing video games should be considered an actual ‘sport’ or not. Wikipedia describes sports as, “Sport (UK) or sports (US) are all forms of usually competitive physical activity or games which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators.” ESport players and fans could care less about the terminology, as long as the games are extremely rewarding and garners global recognition. Just last year in 2015, Valve Corporation hosted its fifth iteration of annual Dota 2 Championship which boasted the prize pool of US $18 million and broke the record set by their previous iteration as the highest prize pool in eSport. Just to give you an idea, Golf’s US Masters handed out US $10 million the same year. These athletes that practice the game day in and day out to master the skills and possess top notch reflexes also get paid in six figure salaries, most still in their teens and early 20s. Of course not everyone makes the cut but those who do surely get rewarded and achieve celebrity status in the gaming community. You don’t believe me? Ask Sumail “Suma1L” Hassan Syed of the popular Dota 2 team Evil Genuises, who made a name for himself at just an age of 15 by securing first place for his team in the Dota Asia Championships winning $1.2m, and repeating the success later that year in the most prestigious Dota 2 tournament in the world The International 5 and bringing in a $6.6m prize pool to his team in 2015.
E-sport has also been recognised by many universities in the US, some even offer scholarships to professional gamers. In Sweden, there are schools with eSport in their curriculum that are aimed at improving reflexes, decision making ability, communication and tactical approach among students.
Now, coming to the question that is on everyone’s mind right now: What is the current state of eSport in Nepal? The answer is somewhat bittersweet. Although we do see a handful of eSport events happening every year, with a decent prize pool, there is still a long way to go. The progress has been sluggish, but it is surely not in the same place it was a decade ago, when tournaments were only held by local cyber cafes and gaming hubs in small scale just to promote gaming among the purists; times have changed for the better and now the gaming community in Nepal measures in thousands, if not more. The popularity of eSport has gone up tenfold globally in recent years and there are more multi-national brands dedicated to this industry than ever. With these factors in regard it is safe to assume that the potential competitive gaming holds in Nepal still remains untapped.
Cyber cafes and console gaming centres are packed with gamers on a regular basis who spend anywhere from four to eight hours a day playing competitively. The three most popular competitive games in Nepal right now—Dota 2, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and FIFA 16—manage to bring in over 600 competitors collectively at major events. Yet, the scenario is plagued by poor management and high expectations that are not met, but these events take place only annually, giving little boost to the platform to grow.
Nepali eSport organisations such as Myktm and Ngamers have been in the game for a while, their efforts clear in helping develop the competitive gaming scene of Nepal. Come March-April, Crimson Frontiers debuts alongside Hive Gaming Zone and are finally bringing a gaming event that promises Nepali gamers what is long overdue, with features such as live streaming with commentary, first official ranking of eSport teams of Nepal along with daily updates and video highlights online—sounding nothing like any event that we have seen yet, locally. With names such as the popular cyber café, Power-Play and the console gaming centre Hive Gamespot associated with it, gamers are naturally expecting a lot. If they deliver, the event could well cement itself as the biggest one in Nepal yet, paving a transformation in the gaming community itself, but only time can tell.

Lanka make short work of Nepal

Nepal lost their second official warm-up match ahead of the ICC U-19 World Cup going down to Sri Lanka by 65 runs in Savar, Bangladesh on Monday.
It was second loss for Nepal, who suffered a 110-run defeat against Pakistan in the first practice game on Saturday. Nepal begin their seventh U-19 World Cup campaign with a game against New Zealand on January 28. India and Ireland are the other two teams in Nepal’s pool.
On Monday, Sri Lanka managed 230-9 with Charith Asalanka and Shammu Ashan making aggressive half centuries. Nepal were bundled out for 165 in 42.1 overs, failing to cash in on a quick-fire start provided by opener Sunil Dhamala. Dhamala gave Nepal a 40-run first wicket stand with Sandeep Sunar (12) in 5.2 overs. He made 26 off 18 with five boundaries. They were reduced to 62-4 in 15.3 overs after Nepal lost Sunar, Yogendra Karki (15) and Ishan Pandey (one).
Aarif Sheikh (10) and Raju Rijal tried to keep Nepal in the game with a 28-run partnership but former’s dismissal triggered a collapse to be reeling at 118-8 in 35.3 overs. Rijal was out for 31 off 55 with two boundaries, while Rajbir Singh (duck) and Kushal Bhurtel (three) fell cheaply.
Dipendra Airee and Himanshu Dutta pushed the team towards respectability adding 47 runs for the ninth wicket before two wickets in two balls ended Nepal’s challenge. Dutta hit two sixes in his run-a-ball 21. Airee was stranded on 33 not out from 44 balls with four boundaries.  Airee had also top scored with 42 runs for Nepal against Pakistan. Asalanka picked up two wickets for Sri Lanka.
Earlier, Nepal reduced Sri Lanka to 71-3 in 18.5 overs before Ashan and Asalanka led the charge with a 83-run stand. Ashan was unbeaten on a 74-ball 81 in an innings studded with four sixes and as many fours. Dhamala, Kandel and Sandip Lamichhane picked up two wickets for Nepal.

Manang enter semis

Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) laboured into the semi-finals of the Aaha-Rara Gold Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Gurkha Brigade of the Indian Army here at the Pokhara Stadium on Sunday.
Amit Tamang and Olawale Afeez scored in extra time after the regular 90 minutes of play ended in a goalless deadlock.  The Gurkha Brigade had set up the quarter-final clash with MMC after winning their first round game against Nepal APF Club 2-1. MMC had a first round bye and entered directly into the quarter-finals.
Tamang struck seven minutes into the extra time, scoring from a freekick which was awarded for a foul from Prashant Gurung of Gurkha Brigade. Gurung was sent off for the offense and Tamang stepped in to convert from the resulting freekick. It took only three more minutes for MMC to make their numerical advantage count as Afeez added the second capitalizing on a pass from Ashish Lama to seal the match.
MMC’s participation itself was in doubt since seven of their regular members, who were on national duty for the Bangabandhu Gold Cup and returned home on Monday, failed to join the squad. “Anfa had agree to release the players but it did not keep its promises pitting us in dilemma,” said MMC coach Chhiring Lopsang Gurung.
“We don’t want to stop players from representing nation but we also want to make sure that they are available in tournament our club participates in,” said Gurung adding that somehow collected players for the match.
Gurkha Brigade coach KP Rai took solace from the fact that they played a competitive game. “Win and loss are part of the game but we put on a decent fight which is satisfying experience.
Tribhuwan Army Club will take on Three Star Club in a clash of giants on Monday.

Limbu guides Jhapa to semis

Jhapa XI hammered Gazirchat Sporting Club (GSC) of Bangladesh 4-1 to enter the semi-finals of the 14th Aaha-Rara Gold Cup here at the Pokhara Stadium on Tuesday.
Karna Limbu scored twice while Ganesh Khadka, Nagendra Limbu added one goal each in Jhapa’s convincing victory. Manik scored the only goal for the visitors. Jhapa will now take on Manang Marshyangdi Club in the semi-finals.
Limbu struck early in the sixth minute, scoring in a rebound close from the goalline after GSC goalkeeper Masoom blocked a shot from Khadka. The lead doubled
in the 15th minute when Khadka struck on a cross from Yogesh Gurung.
Jhapa players have been competing as a unit in national tournaments for a long time and they made the most of their coordination by adding the third goal in the 28th minute. Second goal scorer Khadka was the provider this time, feeding Nagendra inside the area before the midfielder slammed home the third.
Munik leased some life in GSC just three minutes after the resumption to reduce the deficit. Munik brilliantly headed home a corner for a goal that revitalised the GSC players. GSC began to play attacking football with some good passes but poor finishing cost them the match.
It was rather Jhapa who put the issue beyond doubt after Limbu brought his second goal in the 74th. Limbu was later adjudged the man-of-the-match. GSC were replacing another Bangladeshi team Rahamatgunj MF Society but headed back home from
their first game.
Jhapa coach Bhagirath Ale was all praise of his team. “We were quite unaware about the opponents but our boys did well,” said Ale expecting a tough match against title contenders Manang. GSC coach Anamul said his assembled side lacked coordination.
“We came into the tournament collecting players from several clubs and it was
all but certain that they would lack coordination. We had
neither practice together nor played competitive matches,” said Anamul adding his
players were not prepared enough according to the tournament level.
Hosts Sahara Club will take on Tribhuvan Army Club on Wednesday.

Surveys reveal jump in prices due to embargo

Market prices in the Kathmandu Valley have shot up due to a drop in shipments caused by the Indian trade embargo and the government’s inability to control the ensuing black market.
A market survey conducted by the Society of Economic Journalists-Nepal (Sejon) shows that commodity prices have jumped up to six-fold. The highest rise in prices was seen in petrol and electric heaters which became 573 and 500 percent dearer respectively. According to the study, motorists had to pay as much as Rs700 per litre of petrol on the black market against the government price of Rs104.
Likewise, electric heaters that used to cost Rs250 each jumped to Rs1,500 after the embargo as a cooking gas crisis forced householders to turn to electricity to cook their food. The study also revealed that diesel was being sold at Rs350 per litre on the black market against the official price of Rs81. People were made to pay up to Rs8,000 for a cylinder of cooking gas, more than five times the normal rate.
Meanwhile, food prices rose 150 percent, hotel menu prices swelled 66 percent, prices of electric appliances soared 500 percent and prices of construction materials rose 100 percent, the survey said.
Among food products, prices of edible oil and pulses have registered the sharpest increase. Due to the government’s weak market control mechanism, prices of sunflower oil and soybean oil have jumped 150 and 125 percent respectively. Pulses have become 87 percent dearer. The survey said that the government did not have a clear policy and programme to ensure smooth supply of essentials in the market.
Likewise, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said that government agencies had been “facilitating” smuggling of petroleum products from India.
After monitoring movement in the Tarai districts bordering India for a month, the national rights body concluded that petroleum products were being sneaked in from across the border in collusion with security forces and the local administration.
The NHRC report claimed that petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas were being smuggled through Thori, Nirmalbasti and Subarnapur villages of Parsa district in large quantities.
Security agencies have been lax in stopping black marketing and smuggling at transit point other than Birgunj.
According to the report, around 150,000 litres of petroleum products were being smuggled through Thori alone on a daily basis.

Bardia farmers rue drop in paddy prices

Farmers from Rajapur, Bardiya, have complained about low paddy prices this year.
The farmers, who had sold Makwanpur Paddy at Rs2,400 per quintal last year, are getting just Rs2,000 this year. The Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) has set the price at Rs2,100 on Dec 1, 2015, but traders are not willing to purchase at that rate.
NFC had first planned to purchase 30,000 quintals of paddy from the farmers, but again raised the amount by 10,000 quintals.
The farmers have so far sold 32,000 quintals of paddy to NFC, according its manager Bhoj Raj Pandey. Jiv Raj Regmi, former vice-chairperson of Rajapur VDC, said farmers have been compelled to sell paddy at rates lower than last year’s. He said NFC’s decision not to purchase Masino and Madhyam paddy has further troubled the farmers.
Jagat Tharu, a farmer based in Pashupatinagar-1, said even the government was paying less for their produce, let alone traders. “Moreover, the policy of not purchasing Masino and Madhyam paddy has hit us further,” Tharu said.
According to Hari Ram Tharu of Rajapur-14 lamented: “If this situation persists, farmers might not be able to engage in agriculture,” he said.
According to NFC, Rajapur produces up to 400,000 quintals of paddy a year.

Sugarcane farmers prefer dealing with middlemen

Sugarcane growers have been forced to sell their crops to middlemen for lower prices as they are unable to transport them to the mills due to high transportation costs. A gasoline shortage has led to transport entrepreneurs hiking freight rates steeply.
The floor price of sugarcane for this year has been fixed at Rs448 per quintal. However, cane farmers have been selling their harvests at Rs300 per quintal as these agents come to their homes and offer to pay cash.
Many farmers who have not yet received full payment for the sugarcane they sold to factories in the past year are happy to get instant cash at their doorstep.
Ram Singhasen Patel, a local farmer and general secretary of the Sanghia Samajbadi Forum, said middlemen had made things easier for farmers who are having a hard time sending their crops to the sugar mills due to the high freight rates.
“Middlemen come to the doors of the farmers and pay them instantly. Currently, we are in the midst of the Madhes protest. As a farmer, we are obviously victims, and the middlemen are getting an opportunity to make profits,” he said.
However, farmers feel that selling sugarcane at Rs300 per quintal during this crisis period is a good deal. “Growers get cash at their homes, and they don’t have to transport their sugarcane to the mills and wait for a long time to get payment.”
Bijay Kant Jha, general manager of Indu Shankar Sugar Mills, said it was not a good idea to involve middlemen to buy sugarcane from farmers.
“We have heard that some mills have been sending their people to the farmers’ homes to buy sugarcane at a cheaper rate,” he said. “It is not right to cheat farmers by paying them less than the floor price.” He added that his mill had not procured sugarcane from middlemen.
Sugarcane is grown on more than 70,000 hectares in 17 districts. Sarlahi, Mahottari and Nawalparasi are the main producers of sugarcane in the country.

Syrian army seizes strategic town in Deraa province -monitor

The Syrian army on Monday recaptured from insurgents a strategic town in the southern province of Deraa after fierce fighting, securing its supply routes from the capital to the south, a monitoring group said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting is now outside the western parts of the town of Sheikh Maskin, which lies at a crossroads linking the provinces of Suwaida, Quneitra and Damascus to the southern part of the country. It also links eastern and western Deraa.
"The town is very important for both sides. They have both fought fiercely. Now by taking it, the regime has cut off the rebels links between eastern and western Deraa," said Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Britain-based Observatory, which tracks the violence in the country through a wide network of local sources.
"The destruction in the town is huge."
The army launched its offensive against insurgents in Sheikh Maskin late last month and was supported by dozens of air strikes carried out by Russian and Syrian warplanes.
Capturing Sheikh Maskin would allow the army to press forward towards al-Harra hill which is the highest point in Deraa.
Southern Syria is the last major stronghold of the mainstream insurgents who have been weakened elsewhere by the ultra-hardline Islamic State group in the east and north, and gains by the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's wing in Syria, in the northwest.

Myanmar's incoming leader Suu Kyi holds talks with army chief

Myanmar's democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi has held talks on the transfer of power with army chief Min Aung Hlaing, before a parliament dominated by lawmakers from her National League for Democracy (NLD) convenes for the first time next week.
It was the second meeting between the pair since Suu Kyi's party won nearly 80 percent of contested seats at a historic election last November - a victory that seems poised to give Myanmar its first democratically elected government in decades.
The military is Myanmar's single most-powerful institution, experts say, and anyone who wants to hold power needs its cooperation.
The country's 2008 junta-drafted constitution guarantees the armed forces a quarter of the seats in the parliament, a constitutional veto and three security ministries.
"Both sides cordially exchanged views on transition and peace and stability in the post-election period, the parliamentary affairs, the formation of the new government," said a statement in English posted on Min Aung Hlaing's Facebook page on Tuesday morning. The meeting took place on Monday.
The talks lasted for about two hours and included top aides from both the military and the NLD.
The constitution bars Suu Kyi from becoming president because her children have British citizenship. The NLD leader has vowed to appoint a ceremonial president and lead the country nonetheless, "staying above the president".
One of her party's top priorities - and bone of contention between the NLD and the army - is a constitutional amendment to allow Suu Kyi to become president, although NLD leaders have vowed not to antagonise the military and push for a gradual, rather than immediate, change.
Suu Kyi has stunned the world since the election by swiftly reaching out to her former foes, including Than Shwe, the former leader of the junta that had ruled the country for 49 years until it gave way to semi-civilian government in 2011.
Analysts focused their attention on one rare attendee of the meeting, Tin Myo Win, Suu Kyi's long-time personal physician.
He typically does not attend senior level NLD meetings, but has for months been the subject of speculation about whether he would be the party's presidential candidate due to his closeness to Suu Kyi.
The doctor is an NLD loyalist and former political prisoner. He was one of the few people allowed to visit Suu Kyi when she was under house arrest.

Oregon armed protest leader Ammon Bundy seized in deadly clash

US police say they have arrested the leader of an armed militia which occupied a wildlife refuge in Oregon, with one person killed in a shoot-out.
Ammon Bundy and four others were arrested during a traffic stop, police said. One person was injured.
Two other activists connected to the group were later arrested in separate incidents, also in Oregon.
The self-proclaimed militia led by Mr Bundy occupied the refuge earlier this month in support of two local ranchers.
Other members of the group were reportedly still at the refuge, where the FBI was setting up a perimeter.
FBI officials said in a statement that Mr Bundy, 40, was arrested in a traffic stop on Highway 395 along with his brother Ryan Bundy, 43, Bryan Cavalier, 44, Shawna Cox, 59, and Ryan Walen Payne, 32.
Two other activists connected to the group, Joseph Donald O'Shaughnessy, 45, and Peter Santilli, 50, were later arrested, separately, in Burns, Oregon.
Each of the defendants faces a charge of conspiracy to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation, or threats, the FBI said.
According to the Oregonian newspaper, Mr Bundy was en route to a community meeting in John Day, Oregon, where he was scheduled to be a guest speaker, when authorities stopped his vehicle.
The newspaper said Ryan Bundy was injured in the arrest, suffering a minor gunshot wound. Authorities did not release the identity of the person killed.
Some 25 miles (40 km) of Highway 395 was shut in both directions following the incident, local officials said.
A joint statement released by the FBI and Oregon State Police said the two forces conducted an "enforcement action to bring into custody a number of individuals associated with the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. During that arrest, there were shots fired."
The statement added: "One individual who was a subject of a federal probable cause arrest is deceased. We will not be releasing any information about that person pending identification by the medical examiner's office.
"One individual suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was arrested and is currently in custody."
Mr Bundy and a right-wing militia group occupied the refuge on 2 January to protest against the imprisonment of two ranchers in rural Harney County.
My Bundy and his brother are sons of Clive Bundy, who was in 2014 involved in a stand-off over grazing rights between armed anti-government activists and federal officials.
